The devastation of the wildfires that rampaged Maui is a tragedy that will affect us all for a very long time to come. There are already land grabbers that are taking advantage of the families affected and their vulnerable situation. This is the worse wildfire in US history in more than a century’s time.
I was blessed to dance so many opportunities here on the mainland and on the opposite coast. I owe a great many thanks to Hawaii, the history and culture of Hawaii, and of course the music and dance of Hawaii’s people. I have donated to the Redcross and urge others to share and donate what they can.
There are also a lot of pets misplaced. As many of us know and feel, pets are also ‘ohana. Here is a link to Maui’s Humane Society for those interested in helping in that aspect.
Americares is responding to the wildfires in Hawaii. This is another option in which you or yours can help. Click their donation link here.
World Vision is another charity that focuses on the immediate needs of families affected by a disaster. They are also responding to the wildfires in Maui. You can donate to them here.
Hands-on Maui is a local chapter that was in place for volunteer organizations on the island. I do not know if they have anything that you can help with immediately. But as the destruction of homes and people will likely have long-term consequences, it may be helpful to have their link if you end up on the island.
There are other personnel that are going to Maui to help with restoration, but for now, physically going to help on your own is not encouraged. In fact, the government wants tourists to leave as soon as possible. Joining the Peace Corps in general, can help give people whose hearts stir at hands-on volunteering.
Let me know in the comments if there are any other good organizations that are helping Maui’s efforts with the wildfires. Wishing all families Godspeed and Aloha.
