Can You Take a Break from Dance and Come Back Later?

There are two rules in life that people make up for themselves that annoys me. The first one is “waiting for the right time.” This corresponds to what I’m about to say next. And the next one is “it’s too late now.” They both come from the same mentality that there are times in life when you are supposed to do things as if life was a magical chart to be filled up at certain ages and dates. Life is unpredictable, you can plan every step of the way or take it as it comes. Maybe there’s a happy in-between. For people who can plan every step of each milestone in life, congratulations? How did you do it? That’s not me and that’s not most people.

Rather than saying, “wait for the right time” or “it’s too late now,” my mantras have been, “waiting for the right times is a prescription for a wasted life” and “it’s always the right time.”

People are starting their dance careers later in life now. You might not be able to be a prima ballerina with breaks, but then again you just might.

The answer to this question is based on your mentality.

The answers for me to all of the below questions, is yes.

  • Can I return to dance after having a baby? YES
  • Can I return to dance after having an injury? YES
  • Can I return to dance after going to a regular university? YES
  • Can I return to dance after taking a break for a different career? YES
  • Can I return to dance after having to return home to care for a loved one? YES

The answer is YES.
