Ballet – Basic Foundation for All Dance

Technology today offers a lot of freedom in terms of dance education. Not only are online tutorials available but you can actually teach live via online streaming platforms. It’s not just adults taking advantage of these new opportunities. Children can take online classes according to their availability since the daily lives of children have never been more busier than in the current world.

I still teach live, person to person or in a traditional classroom setting. This is the best method of receiving information especially for dance. But for those who don’t have a chance to do that due to location or schedule, alternatives are available. Such platforms like Outschool where I currently offer classes for children exist for such a reason.

Traditional ballet tutelage ousted a lot of children in the distant past. Not every child could even take ballet even if there was a school right in their block. The competition for getting into ballet school was that fierce. This competitive approach was great for developing some of the world’s finest dance artists but denied non-ballet students the chance to develop a strong basic ballet background.

A ballet background in dance does not have to lead to a ballet career. Many people have grown in their own dance discipline utilizing the shared ballet basics. The technique you acquire from basic ballet understanding benefits your life long term.

Understanding the placement of your center of gravity, correct execution of simple plié exercises can extend your dance life and accentuate your movement. When you execute dance steps with strong technique stemming from understanding the movement as well as your own body, you will see a concentrated difference in your performance.

I also believe that consistent ballet practice extends the lines of the body and make the execution of dance artfully pleasing as an audience member. This is not a statement regarding body type but rather again, the execution of performance. You can actually see the lines drawn in the space more profoundly carved when performed from a place of strong technique.

Most dance forms require the same basics of ballet. These elements include extension, plié, turns, and transfer of weight. All of these are found in basic ballet teaching.
